Application Process

The Physics Graduate Program only accepts applications for Fall admissions. If you would like request an exception to this policy, please email grad at physics.umn.edu for more details.

Application to the graduate program in physics requires completion of the Graduate School application. The application must be submitted by:

  • Domestic: December 26, 2016
  • International: December 26, 2016

Early application is advisable, especially for international applicants. We will begin accepting applications September 1st, 2016.

All application materials are submitted electronically through the ApplyYourself application system. All correspondence regarding your application, including admission decisions, will be communicated to applicants using this system.

The following information is required:

  • Complete the following statements:
    • On the "Application Statements" page:
      1. Objectives
      2. Diversity
    • On the "Department/Program Forms-- Physics & Astronomy" page:
      1. Experience
      2. Resume or CV
      3. Other credentials
    • Please remember to include research experience and any publications you may have in these statements. You do not need to complete or upload any information to the "Program Supplementary Information" page.
  • GRE scores, if you have them (particularly advanced physics).

  • TOEFL score, if your native language is not English.

  • Identification of three people who will write letters of recommendation.

  • Transcripts from all colleges or universities attended and, if applicable, one transcript from the institution where you obtained your M.S. degree. Unofficial copies of your transcripts are acceptable when applying. The Graduate School requires official transcripts after admission to our program.

Note: The online application is not complete until the application fee has been paid. Your application will be reviewed upon receipt of all application materials. The School of Physics and Astronomy does not send acknowledgment upon receipt of application, nor does it send notification of missing documents. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the arrival of all necessary documents to their correct recipients.

A decision regarding your application will be made late February to early April.

Physics Open House for the 2017-2018 admissions cycle will be late March. We welcome all applicants, but can only reimburse those to whom we have offered admission and are coming from within the United States.
