Most metals, when cooled below a certain temperature, become superconductors. A superconductor not only carries electric current without dissipation but it also expels the magnetic field from its interior. "Microscopically we understand that the system is in a new quantum state where pairs of electrons form bound states, called Cooper pairs, in a coherent way, " says Rafael Fernandes, a theoretical physicist who studies superconductivity.


Mandic to receive Taylor Award for research

Professor Vuk Mandic will receive the 2017 Taylor Award for Distinguished Research. Mandic studies the earliest stages of the universe at the highest energy scales. He is a member of two collaborations: LIGO which recently confirmed the existence of gravitational waves and CDMS which is searching for Dark Matter. More »

Pribiag receives Sloan Fellowship

Vlad Pribiag

Professor Vlad Pribiag has been selected as a 2017 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Physics. Pribiag is one of only 23 physicists to receive the fellowship this year. Pribiag's research focuses on electronic transport in low-dimensional materials. More »
